Electrical Engineer, PCBA Test Infrastructure, Robotics

About the role

OpenAI's Robotics team is building general-purpose robotic systems that combine advanced AI models with physical hardware. This senior individual-contributor position owns printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) test infrastructure, from architecture and circuit design through validation and deployment at contract manufacturers. The role is based in San Francisco with four days a week on site and includes travel for builds and deployments.

What you'll do

• Architect PCBA test stations covering device-under-test interfaces, programmable power, loads, signal routing, instrumentation and protection.
• Translate board requirements and failure modes into test coverage, measurement methods and pass/fail criteria, partnering on design for test.
• Design and bring up fixture interface boards, switching circuits, harnesses and connectors, releasing schematics, layouts and BOMs.
• Write and maintain test code for instrument control, board programming, automated sequences, diagnostics and result logging.
• Deploy, correlate and support test stations at contract manufacturers, including operator training and documentation.

Requirements

• Proven delivery of significant electronics test-system projects from ambiguous requirements to sustained production use.
• Hands-on circuit and fixture design, board bring-up, power delivery, signal switching and instrument integration.
• Strong PCBA debug skills with oscilloscopes, meters and logic analyzers plus systematic root-cause analysis.
• Python (or comparable) coding against real hardware, including sequencing, error handling and structured logging.
• Practical knowledge of grounding, signal integrity, calibration, ESD controls and power sequencing.
