Senior Engineering Manager, AI Foundations

About the role

Coinbase is hiring a Senior Engineering Manager to lead its AI Foundations team, which builds the shared infrastructure that lets teams across the company use AI securely, reliably and cost-effectively. The scope covers the LLM Gateway, MCP Gateway, knowledge and context services, evaluation infrastructure, and AI discovery and spend tooling.

What you'll do

• Lead the AI Foundations engineering team, owning hiring, coaching, technical direction, prioritization and delivery of shared AI services.
• Own the "Neutral Foundations" pillar of Coinbase's AI tooling strategy and define a 2027 roadmap.
• Deliver the LLM Gateway and MCP Gateway, and pave the way for model routing and evaluations.
• Partner with Product and senior engineers to balance fast model and agent innovation with reliability, security, developer experience and cost.
• Work with Security, Legal and Finance on AI governance and spend controls, and manage engineering-side vendor relationships.

Requirements

• Experience leading engineering teams building AI or platform infrastructure.
• Ability to drive operational excellence across AI primitives and services.
• Track record of growing the next level of engineering leadership.
• Willingness to join quarterly in-person "surge" working sessions (remote-first, not remote-only).
