Machine Learning Research Intern (Summer 2027)

About the role

Scale AI is hiring Machine Learning Research Interns for Summer 2027 to join its ML Research team in San Francisco or New York. Interns work on frontier model research and production ML, with mentorship from experienced researchers and ownership of work that gets published or shipped.

What you'll do

• Research post-training and reinforcement learning methods that make models more reliable on high-stakes and long-reasoning tasks
• Evaluate frontier model capabilities, including preparedness research and new benchmark design
• Explore scalable oversight protocols and synthetic or hybrid human-in-the-loop data generation
• Improve production models through retraining and hyperparameter search, then deploy without regressions
• Build post-training or agentic solutions for enterprise and public sector applications

Requirements

• Enrolled in a BS, MS or PhD focused on ML, deep learning or NLP, graduating Fall 2027 or Spring 2028
• Available for a Summer 2027 internship (May/June start) in SF or NYC
• Prior research experience or publications on LLMs, NLP, multimodal models, agents, safety, evaluation or alignment
• Proficiency in Python, JavaScript or a similar general-purpose language
• Nice to have: prior ML internship, top-tier publications (NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, ACL), experience with RL, agents or evaluation infrastructure
