Nu AI Core Summer PhD Research Internship

About the role

Nu AI Core runs a ~12-week summer research internship for PhD students working at the frontier of AI and machine learning. Interns own an end-to-end research or applied AI project, working remotely with one fully covered in-person week at Nu's Palo Alto office.

What you'll do

• Lead a scoped research project combining experimentation with large-scale production systems
• Collaborate with engineers, applied scientists, and researchers on complex AI problems
• Explore areas such as deep learning, LLMs and generative AI, recommender and ranking systems, AI infrastructure, or responsible AI and evaluation
• Use large-scale datasets and compute infrastructure with a dedicated research mentor
• Present final research results to leadership and AI teams

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in a PhD program (CS, ML, AI, statistics, math, computational linguistics, EE or similar) in the US
• Research focus in machine learning, AI, statistics or related areas
• Strong programming skills in Python and experience with PyTorch, TensorFlow or similar
• Experience designing experiments, evaluating models and working with large datasets
• Preferred: publications at top AI/ML venues, large-scale or distributed training, LLM/foundation model work, open-source contributions
